What is MAHA-TET? A Complete Overview
The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (MAHA-TET) is a state-level teacher recruitment examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE), Pune. It is a mandatory qualifying exam for anyone who wishes to teach in government and government-aided schools across Maharashtra from Classes 1 to 8.
MAHA-TET was introduced in line with the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which mandated a minimum qualification standard for all school teachers. Passing MAHA-TET is a prerequisite for appointment as a primary or upper primary school teacher in Maharashtra and the certificate is valid for 7 years from the date of issue (recently extended to lifetime validity for many categories).
From 2023 onwards, the Maharashtra government extended the validity of TET certificates to lifetime validity for candidates who have already cleared the exam. Always verify the latest notification from MSCE Pune’s official website.
Who Conducts MAHA-TET?
MAHA-TET is conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examinations (MSCE), headquartered in Pune. The exam is typically held once or twice a year, though the exact schedule varies. Applications are submitted online through the official MSCE portal.
Why is MAHA-TET Important?
For aspiring teachers in Maharashtra, clearing MAHA-TET is non-negotiable. Without a valid TET certificate, candidates cannot be considered for teaching posts in government schools. The exam tests both subject knowledge and teaching pedagogy, ensuring that only qualified, well-prepared individuals enter the classroom.
MAHA-TET Exam Pattern 2025
MAHA-TET is divided into two papers, each targeting a different level of teaching. Both papers are conducted as pen-and-paper (offline) multiple-choice tests with no negative marking, making strategic preparation extremely important.

MAHA-TET Preparation Tips — How to Clear in First Attempt
1. Understand the Exam Pattern Thoroughly
Before diving into preparation, spend time understanding the exact paper pattern, subject weightages and cut-off marks. Both Paper I and Paper II have 150 questions with no negative marking. This means your strategy should be maximum attempt, zero skipping.
2. Start with Child Development & Pedagogy (CDP)
CDP is the most theory-heavy subject and the one most candidates struggle with. Focus on the key educational psychologists — Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Gardner, Bloom, Skinner and Bandura. Learn their theories, stages and application in classroom settings. The RTE Act 2009 and CCE system are also heavily tested.
3. Build Strong Marathi Language Fundamentals
For Marathi, master the grammar rules (व्याकरण) thoroughly — especially कारक, समास, सन्धि, विभक्ती प्रत्यय, अलंकार and वाक्याचे प्रकार. Also study key Marathi poets and authors like Dnyaneshwar, Kusumagraj, and P.L. Deshpande as literary questions frequently appear.
4. English Language — Focus on Pedagogy, Not Just Grammar
The English section tests both language skills and teaching methodology. Make sure you understand language teaching approaches like CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), the Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method and Whole Language Approach. Grammar, comprehension and phonetics are also tested.
5. Mathematics — Practice Calculations Daily
The Maths section covers class 1–8 level topics but tests them at a conceptual level. Focus on HCF & LCM, percentages, profit & loss, time-distance-speed, geometry (perimeter, area, volume), simple and compound interest, and basic algebra and statistics. Practice mental calculations to save time during the exam.
6. EVS — Focus on Maharashtra Geography and Indian Polity
The Environmental Studies section has a strong Maharashtra-specific component. Study Maharashtra’s rivers, soils, geography, districts and important dams. Also cover Indian Constitution basics, fundamental rights, important amendments (especially the 86th, 73rd and 74th), and standard science topics like photosynthesis, ecology and the solar system.
7. Take Regular Mock Tests
The best way to prepare is to regularly simulate the actual exam. Use this app’s mock test feature to take timed tests, review your mistakes and track your improvement. Aim to score consistently above 70% in practice before your exam date — since the cut-off is 60%, this gives you a comfortable buffer.
Do not ignore CDP — many candidates spend all their time on Maths and languages but CDP has 30 marks and is very scoring once you understand the theories. Also, always verify your answers using the explanation feature in this app, not just the correct option.
