The 5E model is the instructional sequence behind most NGSS-aligned science teaching: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate. It was developed by BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) in the 1980s, built on constructivist learning theory — the idea that students build understanding more durably when they investigate first and get the formal explanation second, rather than the other way around.
That ordering is the whole point of the model, and it's also the part most often lost when a "5E lesson" is really just five loosely related activities stapled together. Here's what each phase is actually for.

1Engage
A short hook — a demonstration, a question, a surprising phenomenon — designed to surface what students already think about the topic and create genuine curiosity about why it happens. This phase is deliberately brief; its job is to generate a question, not answer one.
2Explore
Students investigate hands-on, before you've explained the underlying concept. This is the phase most likely to get compressed or skipped under time pressure, which is a mistake — the Explore phase is where students form their own working ideas, which the Explain phase will then either confirm or correct. Skip straight to explaining and students never get the chance to test their own thinking first.
3Explain
Now you introduce the formal vocabulary and concept — heat transfer, thermal energy, whatever the target content is — and connect it directly to what students just observed in the Explore phase. Because students already have a concrete experience to attach the new vocabulary to, the explanation tends to land better than the same explanation given cold.
4Elaborate
Students apply the concept to a new situation — not a repeat of the Explore activity, but a related one that tests whether the understanding actually transfers. This is where a concept moves from "I saw this happen once" to "I understand why this happens in general."
5Evaluate
A formal or informal check of whether students actually reached the learning objective — a quiz, a lab report, a class discussion, an exit ticket. Evaluation in the 5E model isn't necessarily confined to the very end; many teachers also evaluate informally throughout the Explore and Elaborate phases by circulating and listening to student reasoning.
Why the order matters
The sequence isn't arbitrary. Leading with Explore rather than direct instruction means students form an initial (sometimes incorrect) mental model on their own — and encountering that gap between their prediction and what actually happened is a large part of what makes the Explain phase memorable. A 5E lesson taught in the wrong order (Explain, then Explore) collapses into a standard lecture-then-lab format, which is a perfectly reasonable way to teach but isn't actually the 5E model anymore, whatever the lesson plan header says.
Common mistakes
- Treating the five phases as five unrelated activities. Each phase should build directly on the one before it — Explain should reference what happened in Explore, not introduce the topic fresh.
- Compressing or cutting Explore. It's the phase most vulnerable to time pressure, and cutting it defeats the model's central purpose.
- Only evaluating at the end. Informal checks during Explore and Elaborate catch misconceptions while there's still time to address them, rather than only finding out at the very end that something didn't land.
- Skipping Elaborate. Without a new application, it's easy to end up with students who can explain a concept in the exact context they learned it, but can't transfer it anywhere else.
