Both show up constantly in lesson plan templates, both get shortened to a jumble of letters and numbers in a header, and both get lumped together in casual conversation as "the standards." But Common Core and NGSS aren't two versions of the same thing — they cover different subjects, they're built on different structures, and a teacher might use one, the other, both, or neither depending on what and where they teach.
What Common Core actually is
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) cover two subjects: English Language Arts and Mathematics, from kindergarten through 12th grade. They were developed in 2009–2010 through a state-led initiative, and most — though not all — U.S. states adopted some version of them. A handful of states have since renamed or modified their own versions rather than using the "Common Core" label directly.
CCSS standards are written as grade-level statements describing what a student should know or be able to do — for example, a 4th grade math standard about multi-digit multiplication, or a 9th grade ELA standard about analyzing how an author develops a theme.
What NGSS actually is
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) cover K–12 science only — life science, physical science, earth and space science, and engineering. They were released in 2013, built on a framework from the National Research Council, and adopted by a smaller number of states than Common Core (many others reference NGSS heavily even without formally adopting it, or have written closely related state-specific standards).
NGSS standards are structured very differently from CCSS. Instead of a single statement, each NGSS "performance expectation" blends three dimensions at once:
- Disciplinary Core Ideas — the actual science content (e.g., properties of matter)
- Science and Engineering Practices — what scientists and engineers actually do (e.g., planning investigations, analyzing data)
- Crosscutting Concepts — big ideas that span every science discipline (e.g., cause and effect, systems)
This is why NGSS lessons often look different from a standard-issue content lesson — the standard itself expects students to be doing something (investigating, modeling, arguing from evidence), not just receiving information.

Do they overlap?
More than you'd expect. Common Core actually includes a set of "Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects" standards — meaning a science teacher assigning a reading or writing task might reasonably cite both an NGSS content standard and a CCSS literacy standard for the same lesson. Math and science overlap similarly whenever a science lesson involves calculation, graphing, or data analysis. Neither standard exists in a vacuum from the other, especially in project-based or cross-curricular lessons.
Which one applies to you?
- Teach ELA or math? You're working with Common Core (or your state's equivalent).
- Teach science? NGSS, if your state has adopted it or references it — check your state department of education's current standards page to confirm, since adoption varies and some states have their own science framework instead.
- Teach a cross-curricular or project-based lesson? You may genuinely need both — a science investigation that requires a written lab report can reasonably cite an NGSS content standard alongside a CCSS literacy standard.
- Not sure which your state uses? Search "[your state] science standards" or "[your state] ELA/math standards" directly — state department of education sites are the authoritative source, not a general search result.
